Grit and Grace
My wife Patricia had been diagnosed with cancer and I was a mess. I had this idea borrowed from Ken Wilber's book about his wife's journey through cancer titled Grace and Grit. Since the word grit has limited and unappealing choices for rhymes my brilliant cowriter Teresa, suggested changing the title to Grit and Grace..a much easier phrase to rhyme.
The first line was something that Patricia's downstairs neighbor said to me once when I was describing to her Patricia's daredevil stunt of swinging out over a canyon on a rope swing and subsequent landing on the rocks below on her face. Her neighbor was an 80+ year old Romanian woman with much wisdom. "You can't stop a woman when she really wants to fly"
Truer words were never spoken
You can’t stop a woman when she really wants to fly
Amelia was no stranger to the sky
People came from miles around to see her spread her wings
In the end she gave everything
Amelia flew on wings of desire
Gentle as a breeze , burning like a fire
Grit and Grace
Tht’s how she made her way
With grit and grace
Living every day
Whatever life threw at her she would face
With grit and grace
Tricia got a wake up call in the fall of 99
Told her family and her friends “It’s not my time”
They were so afraid of losing her but she was not afraid to die
Now she says, “I’ve never been so alive.”
Her faith and courage gave her the power
Solid as a rock and fragile as a flower
Grit and Grace
That’s how she makes her way
With grit and grace
She is living every day
Whatever life throws at her she will face
With grit and grace
